People

Socko is a female-led, purpose-led micro brand. Emma Matthews set up the brand with the goal to connect how she spent her working day with a positive impact on others.

In keeping with this approach Emma has built a close relationship with a family owned sock manufacturer in Leicester, UK. Emma visits them at least twice a year and knows the team by name - from Kelly the knitter, to Caroline the linker, to Liz the woodturner!

Planet

Socko are pioneers of the long lasting, sustainable sock.

These Socko socks are made with 100% Global Recycled Standard certified materials. Using recycled materials is normally less energy intensive than making new materials from scratch.

As much as Socko would like to make a 100% cotton sock free of manmade fibres, they have found that blending some man-made fibres is in fact a more sustainable option in terms of improving durability. Each Socko stitch has a nylon component for added durability and this is doubled at the heel and toe, which get the most wear. Socko’s regenerated nylon is sourced from fishing nets, carpet and other post-consumer waste!

To complete their 360 approach every pair of Socko socks is accompanied by a mending kit; which includes a needle and thread, as well as 3-step darning instructions to encourage repairing or reinforcing rather than throwing away.

Areas for development

As a purpose-led micro brand Socko have done an exceptional job of crafting a truly ethical and sustainable pair of socks. Socko is a new brand on Brothers We Stand and we’re currently waiting on Emma to let us know where she sees areas for development.
